The Eeebuntu core team met today to discuss the evolution of Eeebuntu, and what we can do to improve stability in the future while maintaining an award winning operating system.
As an output there are a few things that hopefully all Eeebuntuers will be happy with.
1 .. In the next release, Eeebuntu will no longer be based upon Ubuntu but rather Debian Unstable.
2 .. We are moving to a rolling release schedule, with quarterly ISO rollups.
3 .. We are moving away from being an Eee specific Operating System into a model where we target any desktop or laptop.
In addition, there have been multiple news articles claiming that I have quit work with the Eeebuntu team. These articles are inaccurate, and were written without my or the Eeebuntu teams consultation.
What is true is that I am no longer supporting Ubuntu or Ubuntu variants with any software that I write. It is also true that I am no longer supporting Eee PC Utilities as I previously stated, though I may update it periodically for my own personal use and it will remain on SourceForge and in my personal software repository.
Another inaccuracy spreading in the news is that I am killing Eeebuntu, this couldn't be more inaccurate as I don't own Eeebuntu, I am simply a member of the team. If I or any other single developer left the distribution it would be a setback for sure, but would not "kill" the distribution. As I stated in a comment the other day, I remain comitted to working on software for the Eeebuntu distribution.

I applaud your decision which really makes a lot of sense. A quarterly updated rolling release seems like a great idea. However. since you will be updating quarterly, wouldn't it make more sense to base the distro on Debian Testing instead of Unstable? (in the interest of stability) This seems to duplicate the efforts of Sidux. Also, will this also later result in a name change of the distro (since it will really no lonter be an ubuntu derivative?
This is truly great news!
As to the comment of using testing instead IME this looks good on paper, but sometimes fixes to bugs that get dealt with very quickly in unstable take a while to propagate fully to testing and if it is a critical bug this can really create problems.
Personally I think there is a lot to be learned from sidux and its immediate predecessor Kanotix, but
I think there is definitely room for a similarly sourced distro, hopefully without the politics that has driven some valuable contributors away from sidux.
IMHO there is definitely a void to be filled.
The use of Debian as a base and having compatibility with its massive respositories to me will be a huge bonus. It is a resource no other distro can match.
As I stated on the Eeebuntu forum I think http://smxi.org/ is really worth a look.
I propose that if the Eeebuntu project is no longer based on Ubuntu but instead on Debian, that the name be changed to "Eeebian" instead.
I prefer Deeebian :-)
I run Squeeze on my Eee 1000 and it works near-perfectly except for the stupid rt2860sta kernel panic issue.
Instead of developing an entirely separate distro based on Debian, why not work with the Debian EeePC team to get the EeePC fully supported through the pureblends approach?
And eeebian just sounds weird. Try DebEee instead. :)
Guys
I am very sorry to hear that you have decided to become YALD. (Yet another Linux Distro).
EEEbuntu made a lot of sense, and IMHO, targeting the netbook end of things limits the range of hardware, and gives the distro a purpose. By becoming another debian based linux targeting any hardware, you lose that niche, and you risk spending all your time running after the variety of hardware.
Have fun, whatever else you do.
G.
I agree with the precedent comment.
The fact eeebuntu Base worked perfectly out of the box on my 901 is the real reason I use it.
Otherwise if I had to configure all the hardware myself I'd revert to Puppy Linux and save a Gigabyte on my 4GB hd...
No YALD, my 2cents
Please put some kind of statement on the main eeebuntu/download site because i have just set it up and invested a few days into tuning it, and now i have to learn that it will be discontinued as we know it... this makes me feel like a clown. Also, run Ubuntu on my desktops and laptop and it has been very comfortable for me eeebuntu being a Ubuntu variant. Have you considered staying with Ubuntu and actually trying to influence their release strategy? Sorry mates, i think i'll stay with them and see what can i do for the distro. (Nothing against Debian BTW)
Well done on a worthwhile switch. Although I don't use eeebuntu, I have a desktop pc, I've been following your progress for a long time, and like what I have seen. I'm switching to Debian also, due to issues you've already touched upon.
Good luck.
